We Don't Have Worms (Slam Poem)

Poetry time.  We were supposed to write a slam poem (pretty much a longer, rant-like poem that sounds really good when read out loud).  Here is my slam poem:

We Don’t Have Worms

We say we want equality;
an acceptance of what’s different.

We like to speak words like freedom,
tolerance, and fairness.

We want to be accepted in a sometimes
hostile society.

We don’t want doctrines shoved
down our throats
like med pills down the throat
of an unwilling animal,
to get rid of the worms in its stomach.
We don’t have worms;
We just have differences of opinion.

With all this preaching
of equality, tolerance, and acceptance,
one would think that we’d all
be pretty understanding
towards others not like us,
who aren't us.

Instead, we call each other bigots,
racists, sexists, hypocrites,
and the list goes on.
“Equality!” we proclaim!
“Equality for all!”

But all anyone ever sees anymore
is people,
people shitting on other peoples’,
different peoples’
values, opinions, beliefs, their integrity.

See, equality isn't a pill
we should stuff down each other’s throats.
Equality shouldn't deal
in the drug of hypocrisy
like it’s some sort of medicine.

Because none of us have worms.

A Poem For My Brother

The Time of the Young and the Blood-Tied
the two of us
he the strong courageous warrior
i his weak but loyal tag-along
close kin

we made our business
battling figments of young minds
with broken-ended golf clubs
scarring trees

we were quick cunning
stealthy like owls in the night
hunting for our childhood prey
defending home

we were the invincibles
nothing could deter our youth
bodies spry saplings in sunlight

except time
